My Gear Recommendations

My Gear Recommendations

I’ve spent 15 years in video production and after all that time, I’ve definitely settled on a few essentials that I LOVE. However, I'm a firm believer that the best camera is the one that you use - even if that's your iPhone. You don't need fancy gear to create meaningful videos. That being said, here’s a quick rundown of my favorite video gear recommendations if you're ready to get fancy. You'll see categories below for smartphones, mirrorless cameras, and business essentials that keep my systems running smoothly here behind the scenes.

Video Accessories for Smartphones

Gimbal

I highly recommend using stabilization to take your video to the next level. I use this one on all our travels!

tripod

A tripod is a helpful tool for stable video footage. This one also becomes a selfie stick, and has a Bluetooth remote.

tripod smartphone adapter

If you want to switch easily from horizontal to vertical video with a tripod, you'll need an adapter like this one.

microphone

If you're looking to record better audio, a lapel mic goes a long way. This one plugs right into your phone (you'll need an adapter on newer phones).

Mic adapter for iphone

This adapter converts a headphone plug like on the mic to the left into a lightning cable for your iPhone.

wireless mic system

Wireless systems are a higher investment, but allow you to move around and be farther away from your camera.

Video Accessories for YouTube

camera

I used to use a fancy DSLR in my videography days, but now I use this mirrorless camera to film all my YouTube videos. It's compact and easy to use!

Lens

To get that quintessential blurry background, you'll need a lens like this one.

USB Mic

This is not a good option for travel or if you'll be moving around, but if you're at a desk recording YouTube videos, the Blue Yeti is great!

tripod

You'll need a sturdier tripod for a bigger camera, and this is the one I use to film my YouTube videos. Bonus, it comes with a smartphone adapter so you can film both horizontally and vertically on your iPhone.

Ring Light

I always recommend natural light if possible, but if you're trying to film YouTube videos and need a boost, this ring light is an inexpensive + easy option.

Other Video Favorites

DJI OSMO Pocket

I got this camera in 2019 + it became a fast favorite. It's so powerful, easy to control with your iPhone plus it really does fit in your pocket!

osmo expansion kit

This kit includes a few handy tools, including a control wheel, wireless adapter, and memory card. I especially love the control wheel!

camera bag

I get so many compliments on my camera bag by Ona. The design I purchased in 2013 is no longer available, but head over there to see all the amazing options!

external battery

My husband has battery anxiety 😂 so we always pack an extra charge or two in our bags.
