How to use Trello for Self-Care

As an entrepreneur (or you know, a human), it can be easy to let taking care of yourself take a backseat to taking care of business. I realized after five years in business that I was not making time for myself. I was spending more and more time hunched over my computer instead of living the life I had so desperately wanted when I started my company in the first place. This is why I decided to build self-care into my routine with Trello. Here’s how I did it:

Integrating Self-Care in Daily Routine

There are all sorts of “habit hacks” out there to increase productivity or remind you to take your vitamins. What worked for me, after trying lots of different methods, was integrating self-care right into my current routine. When starting a new habit, if you can trigger the practice with something that’s already in your routine, there’s a better chance of success!

First, I looked at the habit I wanted to add to my life. I wanted to create a more healthy morning routine.

Second, I looked at what I was currently doing in the morning which was checking my email, Trello and social media. I suddenly saw an opportunity! Since Trello was one of the first places I looked every day, I could hack myself with a little habit reminder. Once I realized this, I built the self-care reminder into my Trello task list.

On my weekly to-do list Trello board, I created a card called “Miracle Morning.” I personalized this list based on a blueprint from the book by Hal Elrod. Each Friday at the end of the work week, when I’m preparing next week’s tasks, I use the Butler power-up to duplicate that card on each of my daily lists (I have one for Monday through Friday). That way, when I sit down at my desk or open my phone, the first thing I see is the reminder to put myself first. A few of these tasks, like meditation or gratitude, can be done right from my phone before I even get out of bed.

Trello Improves Consistency

Yes, it would be great if I could start my day without touching my phone. It would be great if I didn’t need the reminder to take care of myself and just did it automatically. But I also recognized that I could either beat myself up for not being perfect or meet myself where I was at. Which just so happens to be on Trello.

Since implementing this system, I’ve become much more consistent with my morning routine. And now I’m curious about other ways I could use this routine-hacking or my Trello boards to build more healthy habits. As you might remember from my post about Dubsado, another tool I use and love, systems are a great way to create more space in my life and business.

Do you have any health-hacks through Trello or your online business systems? I’d love to hear about them!
