Step 1: When to contact a video editor
I’d say at least a month in advance of when you want the video at least, but really, as early as possible. If you still have to collect footage from loved ones for your memory video, remember that we’ll need to give people time to respond. YouTube video editing can be much faster (because it’s less intensive) but still good to reach out as far in advance as possible to ensure you can get on the same page. The more videos you edit with the same editor, the faster the process will go but it takes time to learn each other’s systems + styles.
Contacting a video editor before you film can be helpful too because they might have resources (like I do!) to help you take better videos
Step 2: How to Prepare for Hiring a Video Editor
This is what information you need to give your editor in advance of the project:
-Any samples or inspiration to give them a stylistic direction
-Music style preferences (keep in mind I often can’t use specific songs due to licensing…womp womp)
-Any branding information like fonts + colors
-A script or outline to help guide your editor – include all the important details
-All of your footage (any videos + photos you want to be included in the video)
Step 3: How to send your files
My favorite way to do this is via Dropbox file request. This works from a phone or computer and doesn’t require you to have an account (as long as your editor has one). Other options include Google Drive + WeTransfer.
Step 4: How to give good feedback
Once I get all your files, I’ll stitch them together + all my clients get one round of revisions which means you’ll get a private preview link where you can watch your video + leave feedback. The most helpful feedback is super detailed with exactly what you’d like changed as well as the time code marker where the edit needs to be made (i.e. 1:25). You can find that along the bottom of the video player.
