February was a nesting month around here, as we settled into our new for-now place. It was a great exercise for me to use my creative muscles in different areas (interior decorating, painting, thrifting, macrame, among others). The idea for February’s Project 365 installment took me a while to put together. But, ultimately, I loved playing with the idea of home and what makes a place you’re staying feel like home.
There’s something about the cold winter months that makes me want to stay in and get cozy. What better way to do that then to get some art on the walls, some pillows on the couch, and some tea in my mug! Christian’s also been making brunch for us on the weekends, with eggs, bacon, hash browns and sometimes donuts. This has been a way for us to enjoy one of the perks of a larger space: we have room for a dining table!
When I was growing up, my dad would often clip flowers from our backyard garden and bring them inside before dinner. I don’t have a garden of my own yet but having flowers on the table always makes me feel nostalgic. It’s one of the first things I’d pick up at the store when we were at an RV campsite long enough to have a vase out, and it was one of the first things I brought into our new place
I can be the kind of person who is impatient for a project to finish, but it’s been rewarding to watch the various pieces of this come together and start to really feel like a home. I’ve always felt that because of travels I’ve done over the years and how my friends and family have moved around, that my home is fragmented in the sense that there are bits of it all around the world. I’m lucky, I suppose, to feel that sensation in more than one place, much less any place at all. Lately, Denver has felt that way for me; leaving for our RV adventure and then returning, I finally felt that connection with the city that it had become home.
What does home mean to you?
In some respects, I think of home as a backdrop to our memories. A place doesn’t feel like home until you layer in some memories. An empty room doesn’t have much live until you hang photos on the wall and start living in it. Then, suddenly, it becomes the place where your memories happen.
It’s part of the reason why I started offering a family video editing service. It’s why I teach people to take better videos with their iPhones. We say home videos but really they’re more than moving pictures, they’re living, breathing, memories.
Yes, we have epic moments that punctuate our lives: births, graduations, weddings. But the moments that define us? The extra time we spend cuddling our pets in the morning. The freshly cleaned sheets + the countless times we use our favorite mug for our daily caffeine. It’s the random Friday afternoons we spend in the sunshine with our best friends. And those deserve to be part of our visual stories too!
What does home mean to you? Do you have many places or one place you call home?
