You’re wanting to send a birthday video message montage to a friend that really stands out. But how exactly do you make that happen? Here are my best storytelling tips for how to create a birthday video message montage that earns you the coveted title of “best gift ever.”

#1 Use props like old photos, yearbooks, or mementos
If you have something that will jog your loved one’s memory about a favorite shared memory or inside joke, feel free to use it in your video!
#2 Choose a memorable location
If you can, get creative with your recording location. Try to keep the background simple (you can watch this video for my camera setup tips) but that doesn’t mean your living room couch is the only option. Try your backyard, a park, or a scenic spot in your local area.
#3 Craft a story
When you collect multiple submissions from family + friends, you can take your final birthday montage to the next level by crafting a story with your submissions. Personally, when I edit birthday messages for clients, I like to start the video with everyone saying happy birthday. Then I include the sections about what a great person they are, followed by memories + ending the video with well-wishes for the year to come.
#4 Group messages by theme
Chances are, some common themes will emerge when you’re putting together a birthday montage. Maybe several people mention golfing trips, or stories from college, or how much they enjoy cooking together. I like putting these messages together because it turns a bunch of videos into a cohesive story.
#5 Have people respond to the same prompt
Send the same prompt to all your friends + family. Ask them all to recite the recipient’s favorite poem, quote, or song lyrics then include each person saying a line. Or, ask everyone to hold up a sign to build a complete message. That way, you can weave several people’s videos together, which makes the finished product look really impressive!
